Catching up

Monday, January 29th, 2007

Hey all—

Your only elected representative here with some general housekeeping news. Attendance at last week’s meeting was (predictably enough, I suppose) rather low, so many of you are still in the dark about next semester’s schedule. Well, I’m going to ramp up the suspense just a little bit—but fear not, for tomorrow I will update the website with all the new shows (and Friday my reminder will contain full details).

All episodes of Binchou-tan, which has a truly delightful ending, are now available on the Anime Club servers. Get ‘em while they’re hot!

Also, when our Faculty Liaison e-mails you recommendations, listen to him. “Le Chevalier D’Eon” is an absolutely fantastic show.

Next semester’s preview: “O, from this day forth, my thoughts be BLOODY, or be nothing worth!” (“Bloody” in a Bethel-appropriate manner, of course.)

—Matthew

PS: I was pleasantly surprised to run into Matt Zipf today. This demonstrates two things: 1. Matt Zipf is still alive and reading these e-mails, which is good news. 2. It might be possible to guilt the ex-Prez into returning if I mention him by name.

Everyone wave to Matt!

FOOD!

Friday, January 26th, 2007

Hey all—

The reminder portions of this e-mail will be overshadowed by the promise of FOOD in the form of delicious chocolatey ricey crispy peanuty buttery Scotchies; simply show up tomorrow night for a nice treat! There will even be milk to assuage your thirst…

Of course other important announcements abound. Firstly, we will be finishing up our interim series, and many questions will be answered. Despite her poverty, will Binchou-tan find happiness with her friends? Will the PoorLittleRichGirl(tm) make contact with the happy low-income world? Will Yurie ever be able to confess to Kenji, or find out what kind of a god she is? The answers are not to be missed! I’ll also be revealing an *excellent* (OK, if I do say so myself) schedule for next semester: a little bit of sweet, a litte bit of sour, a dash of love, and just a pinch of GLORIOUS BEAUTIFUL ICE-COLD VENGEANCE!

*Hem.*

I’ll be doing an ad campaign to try to get some more people; don’t miss the preview! We may go a little bit late, thanks to rumbling stomachs and ending sequences. I’ll see you all there!

Hark!

Friday, January 19th, 2007

Hey all—

Hear ye, hear ye, Anime Club shall convene at its usual time and place tomorrow evening for a time of plesaunt dyverciones and other delyghtes! Binchou-tan shall introduce its final new character, a girl named Aloe who has some problems standing up straight when she doesn’t have enough water, and in Kamichu! poor Yurie will face increasingly difficult trials as she must raise the Yamato, run for school president, find her missing brother, and even switch schools in order to attend a Seminar of the Gods. (“Council” is too old-fashioned, I guess.) Your President is HYPED about both shows because he hasn’t seen any of these episodes before—but they’re guaranteed to be great!

Also of note are a few Binchou-tan extras uploaded to the Anime Club Server: Aozora ni Wasuremono is a stand-alone (very short) OVA by a different company that basically replicates the first episode of the series with (in my opinion) inferior animation, and the “Promotional Video” is just what it sounds like, but the “Marching Song” is incredibly fun—it’s a sing-along sketchy SD version of the show’s ED song, and it’s just so catchy that you can’t help but tap your toes! (Nor can you get it out of your head for several days. You have been warned.)

I’ll see you all tomorrow night!

Contest Results and Uploads!

Saturday, January 13th, 2007

Hey all—

Just a quickie to announce that the next four episodes of Binchou-tan are now available for download, and that the coveted Kodacha DVD was won by [drumroll, please]… Rachel McNeil, for her kinetic, high-speed, and completely comprehensible reading of the text file! Be sure to congratulate her next week, when I remember to send out a reminder on time!

Whoops.

Saturday, January 13th, 2007

Hey all–

Please forgive your President, for he is an idiot and completely forgot to send out the reminder e-mail this week. I don’t know if anyone will see this before they leave for Anime Club (and indeed I have my doubts that people read these things at all), but regardless I shall remind you to join us in 45 minutes for more cute charcoal orphans and embarrassed junior high gods! Also, the contest is tonight (I hope you’ve studied) and if anyone has any time after Anime Club, a special offer shall be on the table: a trip to see the INSANELY COOL Curse of the Golden Flower.

I’ll see you all in just a little bit!

Upload! Functionality! Contest!

Saturday, January 6th, 2007

Hey all–

The first two episodes of Binchou-tan are currently being uploaded to the Anime Club server (it’s two episodes per file, so the third one we watched—the one with other characters—will go up next week when we’ve seen the other one in the file) and will be done in about half an hour. Meanwhile, our fine Vice-President has fixed the web site so that e-mails to the server are publishing automatically again, huzzah! As soon as I get a chance I’ll update the series descriptions (probably Monday or Tuesday).

Meanwhile, it’s contest time! The Faculty Liaison is kindly sponsoring an, ah, odd contest for which the prize is the first DVD of Kodocha, a hysterical show the information for which is attached to this e-mail. The winner will be the Anime Club member who can read or recite the text in this attachment comprehensibly at the highest speed and with the greatest level of hyperactive activity. Shouting, head-jamming, and arm-waving are all highly encouraged. Next week we will have our recitations; start practicing!

I’ll see you all in one week’s time, when Binchou-tan plays shiritori, actually meets the poor little rich girl, and even sees some Kamichu!-style spirits, which Yurie-chama (see the consistency of our Moe theme) proves that a god can get sick, that improving one’s handwriting can be *really* hard work, that beaches are people too, and her own battle prowess as she takes part in a cat civil war!

Attachment:
Sana Kurata has a charmed life.

Not only is her mother a famous, award-winning writer, but she’s the star of the hit TV comedy “Child’s Toy” while still in the fifth grade. But Sana’s biggest concern is Akito Hayama, a pint-sized hellion who’s organized the boys in their grade-school class into a mass of unending noise and violence. With the help of Rei, her manager, chauffeur and “pimp,” Sana is determined to win back control of the classroom from her new arch-enemy.
But as her crusade continues, Sana moves further into Akito’s life, and finds that he might not be entirely bad…or entirely safe.

Volume #1: School Girl Super Star
Sana Kurata may be a famous TV star, but her life is anything but perfect! Her classroom at school is controlled by the boy bullies, all of whom are led by the nasty Akito and his gang of hooligans, who are at it again, wreaking havoc in the classroom. But has Sana discovered Akitos secret weakness? Will she be able to exploit it to her advantage or will she just make a fool of herself in front of everyone? Sana had better be cautious because when she acts on her plan the consequences arent exactly what she expected! What adventures await our heroine?

New Posters!

Saturday, January 6th, 2007

Hey All,
Here are some new posters for interim. I think I’ll add a few more that are just some nice spreads, so if you have any clever phrases that would work well with Kamichu, let me know.

Let's go Moe!

Saturday, January 6th, 2007

Hey all–

Welcome back, and come one, come all to Interim Anime Club! We’ll meet at our usual time and place, starting tomorrow; if you’re around, you shouldn’t miss it! [Crud, two exclamation points in a row...] This interim, our Japanese theme will be Moe, an aesthetic I shall define at our first meeting. There are good and bad kinds of Moe shows, and we will be watching two very good ones. Behold, ye members of Anime Club, our lineup!

Kamichu! is the bulwark of this Interim period. Some of you may remember watching the first couple of episodes while I was in England, at which point it was agreed that the show would be a great interim diversion. This 16-episode series about the adventures of a girl who wakes up one morning and discovers she is a god is the perfect stress reliever: it’s cute, it’s funny, it’s extremely Japanese, and it even comes with an uplifting (yet not crass) message about becoming your own person. Our main goal is to finish the show, and I absolutely guarantee that no one will have an issue with watching four delightful episodes a night.

But wait! There’s more! After all, just four episodes of a series won’t get us through a whole meeting–so, for our light entertainment, I present Binchou-tan. A little-known short series that has a Cute Not-Creepy Moe mentality seeping out its pores, this slice-of-life about a little orphan (who wears a piece of charcoal on her head; I shall explain the Japanese pun) and her somewhat unusual friends should serve to fill us with happy sweet thoughts without actually clogging our mental arteries. And since it’s not licensed, its presence on the Anime Club server will console those unfortunately not around for interim…

Being a bit under some very sudden weather, my rhetoric may lack its usual vivacious pop–but I assure you that these shows will make you believe all over again in the power of innocent cuteness to save the world. I’ll see you all tomorrow night!

–Matthew
