Anime Club Tomorrow Night!

Friday, April 27th, 2007

Hey all—

No one reads these, they just need to be sent out as reminders and it doesn’t matter what the text says. So:

“Word.”

See you tomorrow night!

PS: Tune in next week, when I see if I can get away with cussing!

Big News—Special Event!

Thursday, April 19th, 2007

Hey all—

It is with great excitement and a small amount of frustration that I announce a special event: tomorrow night, Oak Street Cinema will be hosting a one-time-only showing of Satoshi Kon’s Paprika. This new film from the director of Perfect Blue, Millennium Actress, Tokyo Godfathers, and Paranoia Agent has garnered Kon’s usual slew of awards and recognition, and by all accounts is a truly “theatrical” bit of moviemaking. Thanks to a balking distributor, this may be the only time the film is shown theatrically in Minnesota, so if you’re around, don’t miss it! (I really wish I could have let you know earlier, but alas! I myself only found out about it today! Thus the frustration.)

If you’d like to come, please:

1. RSVP as it will be necessary to get tickets in advance

2. in your e-mail, either ask me to order your ticket or let me know that you’ve purchased it yourself from http://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/14473

3. wait a bit–once I know who’s coming along, I’ll arrange a meeting time so we can caravan along down. The show’s at 9:30 but we’ll definitely want to leave a bit early so we can get decent seats.

Yes, I’m pumped about this. I hope to see you there!

Download Uploads!

Monday, April 16th, 2007

Hey all—

Brief announcement: the entire content of our meeting on Saturday is available for download! We watched one episode of Kokoro Library (be sure to check it out—it introduces a new character and a tonal shift) and the first four episodes of Iriya no Sora, UFO no Natsu (which is actually even better than I remembered it). This got all of the scheduling quirks out of the way and Anime Club shall now continue as usual. *Chhhk* over.

PS: Be sure to catch up on Iriya for next week! There’s a scene at the end of episode three that… well… I won’t give it away, but it’s really good.

Tonight is RAMUNE GOKUN!

Saturday, April 14th, 2007

Hey all—

No poem today because tonight is special: we will be altering our usual viewing schedule (in a dynamically-created, democratic manner) and playing… Ramune Gokun!

Here’s how it works: we’re starting a new, 6-episode series tonight, Iriya no Sora, UFO no Natsu, which is an absolutely fantastic show… except that for the first two episodes, the writers seem compelled to get every anime cliché they can out of their system. So I’ve made a contest out of it, with an honest-to-goodness-desirable-not-trashy-even-I-want-it PRIZE! Before we start, I will give each audience member a bottle of Ramune. We will then play a drinking game: each time an audience member sees a common anime cliché beings employed, they shout out the cliché—and everyone but them has to take a gokkun of Ramune. The last person with any Ramune left in their bottle wins the prize! (More than one round may be necessary…)

So as long as you come tonight, ready and willing to interact, you can’t lose: although only one can “win,” everyone will have Ramune, Pocky, and (hopefully) some laughs! See you all tonight!

—Matthew

PS: Our poor Vice President has had fluid filling his lungs all week; hopefully he’s well enough to be there this evening! (Wish him well if you see him…)

PPS: We will definitely be watching one episode of “Kokoro Library.” The show’s changing as it gets closer and closer to the violence, and today we will meet… an unhappy person. (NO! But yes!)

PPPS: OK, fine, one more haiku:

My runny nose—
Everywhere but on its dewdrop
The twilight fades.

Special Meeting Tonight!

Saturday, April 7th, 2007

Hey all—

Just a reminder: don’t forget, if you’re around, to come to Anime Club tonight! Our Special Eastertime Showing this year takes us slightly outside our provenance: we’ll be watching a Korean animated feature, My Beautiful Girl, Mari. I previewed it today and wow… it’s really good. I mean, it’s REALLY good. You should definitely come and see it if you’re around. The movie’s only 80 minutes, so there will be some pre-feature fare—bring your own contributions if the thought of what I might show terrifies you!

OK, that’s all. See you tonight!

—Matthew

PS: Popee the Performer, anyone? Heh, heh, heh…
