A few responses to Matt's email

Thursday, August 30th, 2007

1. I second the vote for Nodame Cantabile and for Read or Die TV.
2. Rozen Maiden is about a self-imposed reclusive kid coming to grips with himself. Don’t get too concerned about the Goth-Loli costumes on the dolls. Here are some past comments from a club member (not me):

Which brings me to my newest addiction and recommendation (nice segue, Professor!), and a very surprising one it is: Rozen Maiden. This is an embarrassing one indeed for me to recommend, seeing as its about how can I put this? no, there is no other word for it DOLLS. Mysterious living dolls who come into the life of a junior-high boy who lives alone with his sister (why do anime kids never have parents?) and has some kind of tragic past (I have just watched episode 9 of 12 and am still not completely clear on what happened to him), just when he really needs a new perspective. There is a bit of a dark, Wagnerian (lots of German is used), almost gothic flavor, which normally turns me off, but the antics of the dolls and their mysterious powers keep me wondering what will happen to Jun-kun next.
There is also a second season, called Rozen Maiden: Traeumend, which if I remember my high school German of 20 years ago correctly, the last word roughly translates as dreamingly.

3. Here is a bit of an update on Matt Fisher (complements of his dad, with permission):
**************************************************** Eric:
Since you were kind enough to ask about Matthew’s travel to Japan, I wanted to let you know that he called last night to report his safe arrival. He sounded well-rested and in good spirits. The folks at NOVA had given him a calling card so he could communicate with us. He also reported that they have provided escorts for him at every stage of his inexplicably tortuous journey from Tokyo to Tsuruoka. He also told me that between his bad Japanese and a store clerk’s bad English, he was unable to obtain deodorant. I fear for the Japanese environment.

No Anime Cub tonight and other notes

Thursday, August 30th, 2007

This is just a reminder there is no Anime Club tonight (Thursday August 30th). Our next meeting will be on Saturday September 8th, in the same location at 7pm. If you have any suggestions as to what we should watch this semester, please email me or Dr. Gossett (I am much more receptive to suggestions than Matt F was ;-) ). I’ll send out emails later with more details on what we will be watching, however below is some shows which I was considering:

Nodame Cantabile: We watched the first episode of this series over the summer and it looked very promising (its a slice of life/romantic comedy), for more info see http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=7010
Read or Die TV: I’ve been wanting to watch this for a while now after seeing the OVA which was decent.
Rozen Maiden: Although the opening may be disturbing to some, the first episode looked promising and I’m willing to give it a try, even though it seems specifically oriented toward the Gothic Loli fans.
Hayate no Gotoku (Hayate the Combat Butler): We watched one episode of this over the summer and I liked what I saw, for more info see http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=7490

Also, the Anime Club will be represented at the Opportunity Fair. If anyone would like to sit with me at the Anime Club booth and keep me company, that would be great! The Opportunity Fair is on September 3rd and will be from 11am – 2pm in the Kresge Courtyard (if it is raining, it will be moved to the RC gym). So if you’re on campus stop by and say hi, THERE WILL BE FREE POCKY!!!!!!!

P.S: To the best of my knowledge, our previous President Matt Fisher is now in Japan. . . probably lost somewhere in Shinjuku station.

We shall not cease from exploration…

Thursday, August 23rd, 2007

Hey all—

Well, folks, the end of summer approaches, and the time has come for us to say goodbye: I leave for Japan on Tuesday, so tonight is my final Anime Club. Yes, I will be bringing scotchies—oh, right, I must draw attention to this point—FOOD! to mark the occasion, so you’ve got no excuse to miss it!

Tonight features the triumphant return of our three regular shows, including a particularly festive Dennou Coil, along with a surprise choice that I guarantee you’ll all love, but which may leave you gaping: Matthew Fisher, bastion of animated snobbery and sneering elitism, propagating… a sports show? It must be seen to be believed, tonight, at the Bethel Anime Club! I’ll see you all there!

—Matthew

PS:
….And the end of all our exploring
Will be to arrive where we started
And know the place for the first time.

What we call the beginning is often the end
And to make an end is to make a beginning.
The end is where we start from. And every phrase
And sentence that is right—
Every phrase and every sentence is an end and a beginning,
Every poem an epitaph.

Anime Club Tonight!

Anime Club tomorrow!

Wednesday, August 8th, 2007

Hey all—

Having had a most busy day, I plan here to do nothing more than remind you all of Anime Club tomorrow and promise that this time, without fail, we WILL watch Pale Cocoon. Cross my heart and hope to die, may lightening strike me if I lie, may I get arthritis and pinkeye, may leeches smite me from the sky, etc.

See you all there!

—Matthew

Updates!

Thursday, August 2nd, 2007

Hey all—

To my great annoyance, Bethel has taken steps to prevent people from e-mail to lists from off-campus locations. Exactly why they considered such measures necessary is beyond me, but suffice it to say that this is the reason you received no reminder last week. Anyway, I’m deviously tricking them now, and I can happily tell you that all viewed episodes of Dennou Coil are now available for download from our server—for goodness’ sakes watch them if you haven’t seen them all. This is a show that screams excellence so loudly it shatters the thickly opaque glass of… of… of whatever keeps people from watching really good anime.

Don’t miss Anime Club tonight! Behold:

—New, Improved, Eviler Leather-Clad® Tamahome with Realistic Miaka-Beating Action will one-up Nakago by single-handedly squishing a full-size toucan!

—Ataru will experience many misfortunes, most of which are Lum’s fault!

—There’s a festival on in Dennou Coil, but a duel may disrupt it–assuming that the episode is fansubbed in time for us to watch it!

—We’ll watch something new! Possibly the first episode of R.O.D. the TV or whatever strikes our fancy…

—And we’ll end by viewing a single-episode OVA in the Voices of a Distant Star tradition, called Pale Cocoon. This one’s really good, don’t miss it!

I’ll see you all there!

PS! Dang! the exclamation mark key!s stuck and it!s replacing all my punctuation!!!
