Anime Detour Registration!

Monday, September 29th, 2008

First I just wanted to say thanks to everyone that showed up for the Spirited Away showing! For those who hadn’t been exposed to many of Miyazaki’s works, hopefully you enjoyed Spirited Away and perhaps will begin to explore some of his other great films such as Princess Mononoke and Nausicaa.
Believe it or not, pre-registration for Anime Detour has been open for a while and is already 13.57% full (this is the exact figure they gave on their website)! Now is the time to get our forms in and registered to secure our spots, especially considering the last two years they have been sold out at the door. This year should be especially interesting, as AD is changing venues from the eclectic “Thunderbird” Ramada to the larger and perhaps more up-to-date “Crowne Plaza”.
For those of you who have no idea what Anime Detour is, or have never attended a anime convention, I’ll give a brief explanation. Basically its a gathering of individuals who share our same interests in anime and Japanese culture and takes place and a convention center over the weekend once a year. The Anime Club has been attending as a group for the past three years, and every time we’ve had good responsible bethical fun. There are a number of panels running throughout the weekend covering various topics from hosting guest speakers from the industry, AMVs, to “The Horrors of Anime” in which your reminded not all anime is good. They also show anime basically 24 hours a day in a number of viewing rooms, often with new releases from American distributors. Theres also the aptly named “dealer” room in which you can buy anything anime related, and watching cosplayers is also entertaining. If your concerned about not being “otaku” enough for this sort of thing (as I was initially), don’t worry, if you enjoy coming to anime club you’ll have a blast. For more info see http://www.animedetour.com/, or check out http://bethelanime.ath.cx/?cat=2 to see photos of previous years.
So, attached to this email is the registration form. Print it out and bring it with you to the next club meeting, along with your payment, and I’ll send them in together. The pre-registration price is $35, although if we get 10 or more people to sign up we can get a group rate and bring that down to $30. If you don’t have a form of transportation, don’t worry, we’ll figure something out when detour rolls around. Hope your week is going well and see you all this Saturday as we resume our normal lineup!

Sprited Away this Saturday!

Friday, September 26th, 2008

Come see Spirited Away, the 2002 Academy Award-winning film, this Saturday, AC337 at 7pm.
The highest grossing film in Japanese box-office history (more than $234 million), Hayao Miyazaki’s Spirited Away (Sen To Chihiro Kamikakushi) is a dazzling film that reasserts the power of drawn animation to create fantasy worlds. Like Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz and Lewis Carroll’s Alice, Chihiro (voice by Daveigh Chase–Lilo in Disney’s Lilo & Stitch) plunges into an alternate reality. On the way to their new home, the petulant adolescent and her parents find what they think is a deserted amusement park.. Her parents stuff themselves until they turn into pigs, and Chihiro discovers they’re trapped in a resort for traditional Japanese gods and spirits. An oddly familiar boy named Haku (Jason Marsden) instructs Chihiro to request a job from Yubaba (Suzanne Pleshette), the greedy witch who rules the spa. As she works, Chihiro’s untapped qualities keep her from being corrupted by the greed that pervades Yubaba’s mini-empire. The resolve, bravery, and love Chihiro discovers with in herself enable her to aid Haku and save her parents. The result is a moving and magical journey, told with consummate skill by one of the masters of contemporary animation. MPAA Rated: PG
Come see why the Japanese director, Hayao Miyazaki, is considered by many to be the world’s foremost animator.
This is a great opportunity to introduce friends to anime. Bring your roommates, your siblings, etc.
I hope to see you all there.

Downloads and new posters!

Sunday, September 21st, 2008

Hey All!
Just a FYI the 3rd episode of Bamboo Blade we watched last Saturday has been uploaded to the website for all to download, just in case you had to miss the meeting for Homecoming activities. (here is the direct link: http://www.scaleddesign.net/animedl/Bamboo%20Blade/)
Also, I made two posters to get some advertising up around campus, for both next Saturdays showing of Spirited Away and general club awareness. Below are the links to them if you want to take a peak, since they are rather large and didn’t want to fill up your inbox:

P.S: I’m not sure if you all keep up with recent anime news, however if you ever watched Cartoon Network or Toonami this may be of interest:

http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2008-09-20/cartoon-network-to-reportedly-end-toonami-tonight

Toonami is really what got me into anime nearly 11 years ago, with classics like Cowboy Bebop, Outlaw Star, Tenchi, etc. Its sad to it go, along with Adult Swim moving their anime programming to the 5am “death slot” it wont be long before anime completely disappears from CN. However we’ll continue to meet and partake in anime viewing as a group, and hopefully view some series you wouldn’t have been exposed to otherwise. Until next Sautrady, have a great week!

Just an FYI, I’ve completed uploading the entire Nodame Cantabile series to the Bethel Anime Club website (bethelanime.ath.cx), under the “Pages” menu in “Free unlicensed anime downloads”. Hopefully tonight I’ll also get the first episode of Bamboo Blade uploaded as well and will continue to add episodes as we watch them, I may also get some of the other series we weren’t able to preview the first night. First Meeting

Wednesday, September 3rd, 2008

Hello Everyone! I hope you have been having a good first week of classes and that the Internet in your dorms is actually working so you can get this email. This Saturday will be our first meeting and is when we will decide what we are going to watch for the rest of the semester. On that note, we want/need you to think about what you want to see. If you have a series you like, bring in the first one so we can preview it. If there is a series you really want to watch but don’t have, just hit reply all and let us know. Someone else may have it. (A side note, all of the shows we watch need to be mostly bethical). There will be food, there will be fun, so don’t miss it. This Saturday 7-9p in Ac337. See you there!
