No Anime Club this week

Wednesday, January 28th, 2009

There are no classrooms available on Saturday January 31, so Anime Club will not meet this week.
I would suggest gathering in smaller groups, checking out an anime movie from the Bethel University library, and either commandeering one of the giant large screen TVs in a dorm lounge, or else huddling together over a computer screen to watch the movie.
The regular series will continue starting February 7, when our esteemed president will be back and recovered from jet lag.

Last study break of interim

Friday, January 23rd, 2009

Take a break from writing those final papers and studying for your final exam.
The Bethel Anime club will show the movie Metropolis Saturday at 7.
The movie is based on the 1927 German movie by the same name. It is one of the most famous and influential movies in film history. A few clips will probably cross the screen on Saturuday night.
Both versions explore class struggle, distopian futures, and our relationship to our creations (robots).
The anime has an amazing ending. Don’t miss it!

Trip to Japan

Wednesday, January 21st, 2009

As some of you know I’ll be traveling to Japan this Friday, January 23rd. I’ll be meeting up with Matt Fisher, longtime Anime Club President and Bethel Alum, and together well be traveling all over the country (quite literally). A few of you have requested this, so if you would like to keep up with our travels you can do so at my blog:

Nothing fancy, just a place where I can post pictures and descriptions of our adventures. Hope everyone’s J-term is going well and hopefully I’ll see everyone again on the 14th!

Metropolis -Saturday January 24

Wednesday, January 21st, 2009

The final Anime Club meeting for January will be the 24th, when we will view the amazing movie “Metropolis”. There may even be a breif discussion about the original German movie from the 1920s that inspired the anime.
Some non-standard cookies will also appear.,
There will be no Anime Club on January 31 due to no rooms being available on campus that night.
Hope to see you on Saturday.
Eric Gossett

5cm per second this Saturday!

Friday, January 16th, 2009

As decided last week, we are watching 5cm per second. Aside from a few Ghibli films, 5cm per second is one of my favorite movies and in my opinion is Makoto Shinkai’s best work.

http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=6696

It is more of an OVA, divided into three different stories all of which center around the main character in different stages of life. As Dr. Gossett said, it keeps with Shinkai’s continued themes of distance, relationships, speed (especially in 5cm per second). Moreover, this is the best time of year to watch, especially with the bitter cold and snow last week! So bring a box of tissues and join us this Saturday at 7pm! As usual I’ll bring some food, perhaps I should bring some coffee and hot coco.
-Matthew W
P.S. If any of you are coffee fans, I could be persuaded to bring my espresso machine ;)

First meeting of the year!

Friday, January 9th, 2009

Yep its that time again, tomorrow will be our first meeting of 2009! Like I said before we’ll be watching a movie yet to be chosen, I’ll bring in a few selections of my own and if you feel inclined bring a few of your favorites as well. As usual, it will be Saturday night at 7pm. Despite having a few of our members gone we’ll still have a good time and as a further incentive, I’ll bring some treats!

Meeting on the 10th + Nodame!

Sunday, January 4th, 2009

Hey All,
Hope everyone had a great Christmas and New Years! This is just to remind you that we will have our next meeting on the 10th. As planned, we’ll be watching various movies over the month of January while our president is off. I’ll bring in a few selections from my library, feel free to contribute whatever you own as well or of you have any suggestions one of us may own it (or I could easily be convinced to buy it).
Also, the final episode of Nodame has been uploaded! That means we have the entire 26 episodes of season 1, along with all 11 episodes from the Paris chapter available for download.
