TGIF! 8D

Yo! Just a reminder that the Bethel Anime Club is meeting this Saturday at the usual time (7pm-9pm) in the usual place (AC 337). Last week we saw the first episodes of RomeoxJuliet, Moribito, Mushi-Shi, and Gakuen Alice, as well as the second episodes of Axis Powers Hetalia and Death Note. If you missed the meeting, and wanted to see any of these, feel free to email me or talk to me at the club, and I’ll hook you up *thumbs up* Also, I don’t know if I ever put this out here before, but I’ll say it now just in case: if any of the shows we watch make you feel uncomfortable, please let me know. All of the shows we are watching are well crafted and highly recommended in the anime community. However, I am well aware that some (well, really only Death Note) may be a little too intense for some viewers, and, if anyone has a serious problem with it, talk to me, and we’ll work something out. :D

Well, I think that’s about it. I hope to see you on Saturday! Anime Line Up

Anime Line Up!

Hey guys! Okay, so, last week we had 12 people total show up, which is actually a really good turn out :) We played a rather exciting game of Anime Jeopardy, and voted on the anime we would be watching this year. Here is what we have planned:

(Descriptions courtesy of Anime News Network and previews courtesy of their respected sites) Axis Powers Hetalia: Italy, once home of the strongest empire in the world, has changed. This is the story of Italy, now a cowardly pasta-loving fool, and his friends (other personified countries of the world) as they live through strange moments in world history. Preview (aka the first episode. The episodes are only five minutes long): http://www.anilinkz.com/hetalia-axis-powers/hetalia-axis-powers-episode-1/

Death Note: Yagami Light is an ace student with great prospects, who’s bored out of his mind. One day he finds the “Death Note”: a notebook from the realm of the Death Gods, with the power to kill people in any way he desires. With the Death Note in hand, Light decides to create his perfect world, without crime or criminals. However, when criminals start dropping dead one by one, the authorites send the legendary detective L to track down the killer, and a battle of wits, deception and logic ensues… Preview (aka trailer. This trailer is in English, but we will be watching the Japanese): http://deathnote.viz.com/trailer_popup.php?t=3

Gakuen Alice: In a small country school, Sakura Mikan and Imai Hotaru are classmates and best friends – in their own way. Ditzy, emotional Mikan seems ill-matched with aloof, emotionless Hotaru, yet they are together all the time… until Hotaru gets called away to study at the strange and forbidding Alice Academy. In her anguish at being left behind, Mikan finally decides to follow her friend – and doing so, she makes a strange discovery. Preview (aka trailer): http://gakuen-alice.rightstuf.com/

Moribito: Balsa the spearwoman is a wandering warrior, who takes on the task of saving lives, in atonement for a past sin. On her journey, she happens to save a prince, and is tasked with becoming his bodyguard. And he is going to need one, for his own father, the emperor, wants him dead. Preview (aka trailer):

Mushi-Shi: They are neither plants nor animals. They differ from other forms of life such as the micro-organisms and the fungi. Instead they resemble the primeval body of life and are generally known as “Mushi”. Their existence and appearance are unknown to many and only a limited number of humans are aware of them. Ginko is a “Mushi-shi” who travels around to investigate and find out more about the “Mushi”. In the process, he also lends a helping hand to people who face problems with supernatural occurances which may be related to the “Mushi”. Preview (aka trailer. This trailer is in English, but we will be watching the Japanese): http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/video/430/

RomeoxJuliet: This is a story of a young and tragic love, set in the aerial city of Neo Verona. Tyranny rules this island in the sky after the Montague family took control 14 years prior. The disparity among the wealthy and poor is apparent in the present state, the earth dries and water stagnates. The sky itself is wrapped in a deep dense fog. Both Romeo and Juliet’s lineages are of present and past ruling families of Neo Verona. Romeo is the son of the current Montague dictator, Juliet (a beautiful woman) masquerades as a man (Odin), she’s the last descendent of Capulet the previous rulers who were killed by an assasin’s dagger 14 years ago. Her true background is not to be revealed to her until her 16th birthday. The cruel hands of fate introduces 2 people who will become “Star Crossed Lovers”.

Preview (aka trailer. This trailer is in English, but we will be watching the Japanese):

Every meeting we watch one episode from each show (five 20 minute shows and one 5 minute show). At last week’s meeting we watched the first episode of Axis Powers Hetalia, and the first episode of Death Note, since they are both longer series. I’ve attached a link to the first Hetalia episode for you in this email, and, if you would like to see the first episode of Death Note, and you missed it, talk to me. I own the series, and we could work out a time that you could come over to my dorm and watch it, or something.

Anyway, I hope to see you all there! Kick-Off Meeting

Sunday, September 20th, 2009

This Saturday, September 5th, is our first meeting. As in previous years, we will be meeting in AC 337 from 7 pm to 9 pm. If you have any strong opinions on what we will be watching this year, this meeting is crucial, as this is when we vote on anime. This is also a good chance to meet the other members, and play a fun game of Anime Jeopardy for possibly magical prizes. Feel free to bring your anime DVDs (keep it Bethical, though!), a friend, and some snacks to share. (I can’t be the only one bringing snacks this year, lol) If you aren’t able to make it to this meeting, don’t panic. Attendance is not strictly regulated in Anime Club, and, if you can’t make it this time, you are more than welcome to attend the next Saturday :)

See you guys then! Blythe Atkinson (President of the Bethel Anime Club)

PS: The Bethel Anime Club has a website! While there are a few things on it I need to work on, feel free to check it out! Besides club updates, it also has info about the club, anime downloads, and recommended series. Beginning of a New School Year! (And a New Regime! MUAHAHAHA)

Sunday, September 20th, 2009

I posted this on the Bethel Anime Club website, but it didn’t seem to email everyone, so I’m sending this out the old-fashioned way as well :)

Beginning of a New School Year! (And a New Regime! MUAHAHAHA)

What Up, Bethel Peeps! What a long and boring summer it has been! (Lol, is it just me, or did nothing happen this summer? Apart from ten or so celebrities dying…) I am so ready to be back at Bethel! It’s a new year, which means new freshmen to coerce into joining (I’m just kidding XD Don’t do anything that’s un-Bethical!) But seriously…last year was kind of lacking in attendance (we rarely had more than five, which is a little sad, seeing as two of our members don’t even attend Bethel as students, lol), so I’m hoping to kick it up a notch! Remember, people, to invite your friends! Even friends who don’t know anime may have fun, so it doesn’t hurt to try, right? Also, at the end of the 2009 school year we said goodbye to our wonderful president Rachel, who has flown back to Alaska to pursue a career in teachery (Teacherdom? Teacherology?) We wish her the best of luck! *waves to Rachel from across America* But now it is fall of 2009, and a new regime has begun. Because no sophomores or juniors frequented the club, the club offices fell on the shoulders of those that had just finished their freshmen year. That’s right, folks, I’m the Anime Club president! ;D And the role of vice president goes to…*drumroll*…Caleb! W00t w00t! I have some (in my opinion) great things planned for this year, including various random activities for us to do. In fact, at the first Anime Club meeting we’re going to play Anime Jeopardy for some fabulous prizes! (lol, not too amazing though…I’m a college student with no job and no money…you do the math) If you guys have any ideas of something you’d like to do at Anime Club, just let me know, ‘kay? :3 As far as anime goes, it hasn’t been decided what we’re watching yet (after all, we discuss that at the first Anime Club meeting), but there were a few suggestions. “RomeoxJuliet” has been mentioned by multiple people, and, having seen half of it myself, I think it would be a good one to watch. Also, at the end of last year Matt and I were discussing the possibility of watching “Death Note” (after talking to a few anime fans around the Bethel campus, most of them said that they will be more frequent in attendance if we watch “Death Note”). Professor Gossett suggested “Gakuen Alice”, “True Tears”, and “Moribito”, and Matt has recommended “Eden of the East”. Personally, I really want to push for “Axis Powers Hetalia”, but, with the episodes being 5 minutes long and whatnot, I don’t know how well it would be received. I also highly recommend “Baccano!”, but it is rather gory, and I don’t really know Bethel’s policy on violence in anime. Anyway, don’t forget to bring any and all anime you own to the first meeting, and we’ll go over the possibilities. Also, if you know any good online anime that have NOT been licensed yet :3 Well, that’s all I’ve got to say that’s remotely relevant. The first meeting will probably be September 5th (I have to verify this with Professor Gossett though), from 7 pm to 9 pm in AC337 (the room may change). I’ll send out a message when details are confirmed. If you can only come for part of the meeting, that’s fine, and if you can’t attend the first meeting, that’s fine too! Anyone coming is encouraged to bring anime and possibly snacks they’d like to share (or horde to themselves in defiance). See you guys then!
